When your home suddenly feels cold, you want to know whether there’s a simple setting to check, or if you need professional help. If you’re in Ashland, Glen Allen, or Mechanicsville, this quick checklist can help you safely rule out a few common issues.
Think of it as a first 10 minutes checklist, not a DIY repair guide. Don’t open equipment panels, handle wiring, or try to fix internal furnace or heat pump parts. If you notice a safety concern, skip the checklist and call for help.
A gas smell, burning odor, electrical issue, or standing water near heating equipment is a reason to stop troubleshooting.
No checklist is worth risking your safety. If anything feels wrong, call us.
Make sure the thermostat is set to Heat, not Cool or Off. Set the temperature a few degrees above the current room temperature and give the system a few minutes to respond.
If the thermostat display is blank, the batteries may need replacing. If the display is on but the system still doesn’t respond, move on to the next check.
If you’re comfortable doing so, look at your home’s electrical panel for a breaker marked for the furnace, air handler, or HVAC system. If it is tripped, you can reset it once.
If it trips again, leave it alone and call for service. Repeatedly resetting a breaker can be unsafe and won’t fix the underlying issue. Don’t remove covers or touch wiring.
A clogged filter can restrict airflow and may cause a heating system to shut down. Turn the system off before checking the filter. If it looks packed with dust, replace it with the correct size and follow the airflow direction marked on the filter.
Don’t run the system without a filter. If you replace it and the heat still doesn’t come on, leave further troubleshooting to a technician.
Check that supply vents and return grilles are open and clear. Rugs, furniture, curtains, and boxes can block airflow and make rooms feel colder.
Move anything covering a vent. This is a simple check that can improve airflow, but it won’t resolve a mechanical problem inside the system.
If your home has a heat pump, take a look at the outdoor unit from a safe distance. Leaves, branches, or snow piled around it can restrict airflow. Clear loose debris around the outside, but don’t remove panels, chip ice, or use hot water.
Don’t cover the unit. If it is heavily iced over, making unusual noises, or still not heating after you clear loose debris, call for service.
Some older gas furnaces have a pilot light, while many newer models use electronic ignition. If the furnace isn’t lighting, don’t take apart the unit or try to troubleshoot ignition components.
You can look to see whether the gas shutoff valve appears to be open if it is clearly visible and easy to identify. Don’t turn or force a valve if you’re unsure, and never touch it if you smell gas. If it appears closed or you can’t tell, stop and call a qualified technician.
If you suspect a pilot-light or ignition issue, don’t attempt a relight unless your manufacturer’s instructions clearly explain how and you’re certain it’s safe. When in doubt, leave it to a professional.
Some systems have a nearby power switch that looks like a regular light switch. If it is clearly labeled and easy to identify, check whether it has been turned off accidentally.
Don’t remove furnace panels or reach inside. If the switch is on and the system still isn’t heating, it’s time for professional troubleshooting.
Stop after these basic checks if the heat hasn’t returned, or call right away if you notice:
Don’t use an oven, grill, or outdoor heater to warm your home. If your house is getting cold and you’re unsure what to do next, call for help rather than waiting until morning.
